Who is responsible for your data

When your employer uses Ascend, your employer is the data controller and Ascend is a data processor acting on its documented instructions under a data processing agreement. For visitors to this website and for prospective customers, Ascend is the controller.

Ascend is not yet incorporated. Before any customer agreement is signed, this policy will name the legal entity responsible for Ascend and its contact details.

What we process

  • Account and identity data provisioned by your employer: name, work email, job role, department, hire date.
  • Content your organization connects to its company brain: policies, SOPs, handbooks, and, where an organization connects them, documents from systems such as SharePoint or Teams.
  • Work records the platform produces: drafts, assignments, Understanding Check responses and scores, skill levels, goals, and the append-only activity record.
  • Technical data needed to run the service: authentication events, device and log data.

Where your data lives

Ascend is not yet generally available, and no hosting location has been chosen. Where customer data will be hosted will be stated in each customer's agreement before any customer data is processed. Each organization's data is kept in its own tenant, separated in the database by row-level security, and retrieval respects the permissions of the person asking — an agent cannot surface a document to someone who could not open it themselves.

Service providers

Ascend sends text to a third-party language-model provider, currently Anthropic, to draft content and answer questions. That text can include excerpts from your organization's documents and personal data in the records being drafted. Search indexing, result ranking and text-to-speech run on software Ascend hosts itself.

Automated outputs and human review

Ascend drafts; people decide on the outputs that matter most. A performance review cannot be published until a person has approved every section, and performance reviews can never be set to run without that approval. Employees can write a response to their own review. A manager can overrule a pass on a role-play certification. Ascend does not currently offer a general workflow for objecting to every automated output; requests about automated processing can be sent to your employer or to us using the contact details below.

How long we keep data

Retention periods, and how customer data is returned or deleted when an agreement ends, will be set out in each customer's agreement. The activity record is append-only so that drafts, edits and publishes stay attributable.

Your rights

Depending on the data protection law that applies to you, you may have the right to request access to, correction, deletion or restriction of your personal data, to object to processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. If your employer is the controller, we will route your request to them and support them in answering it.
